The pass drops you down in the Overberg's breathtaking patchwork quilt to the  Riviersonderend mountains.
The other road is the R44 and it takes you on the scenic sea route past small seaside towns of Bettys Bay, Kleinmond, Rooi Els and Pringel Bay, set in breathtaking splendour.
Hermanus offers long stretches of soft white sand beaches with small intimate rock-protected coves and spectacular wave action.
Hermanus has the most beautiful beaches in South Africa, come and enjoy sunset strolls along Grotto and Onrus beach.
A section of Grotto Beach now boasts a Blue Flag, offering bathers and sun worshippers  international standard facilities which includes life surfers, security guards and spotless cloakrooms. Grotto Beach stretches all the way around Walker Bay through Stanford to the little town of De Kelders and Kleinbaai - a solid five hour walk. About a kilometre from Grotto towards Hermanus is the grassed and terraced Voëlklip beach, popular with the younger generation who enjoys surfing and bodyboarding
